Derm-Approved Rosacea Skin Care Routine | Rosacea Awareness Month

April is Rosacea Awareness Month, a common (and frustrating) skin condition with no known cure. The good news is that with proper symptom-targeted skin care rosacea can be controlled and minimized. In this post, Dr. Zenovia breaks down her top treatments and skin care recommendations for Rosacea patients.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a recurring inflammatory condition that mainly affects the nose, cheek, and chin area. Flushed cheeks, tiny blood vessels, pimples, and pustules are classic signs of rosacea. This skin condition weakens the skin barrier resulting in flare-ups of increased skin sensitivity and irritation.

Derm-Approved Rosacea Treatments

Dr. Zenovia recommends topical prescription medication as the first line for rosacea treatment. The next step would be taking oral antibiotics like doxycycline and other tetracyclines. These long-term usage antibiotics have potent anti-inflammatory properties that can significantly improve the appearance of rosacea. Laser therapies, such as ones that target blood vessels, are also great for telangiectatic rosacea because if you eliminate the blood vessel bed you can improve the overall condition.

Aside from in-office treatments and prescription medications, your daily skincare routine can help reduce rosacea flare-ups, make the skin feel more comfortable, and boost the skin’s overall health. Dr. Zenovia recommends the following daily skincare regimen to rosacea patients:

Use a Gentle Cleanser: Rosacea-prone skin can get easily irritated, but you don’t want to skip cleansing! Instead, opt for a hydrating, soap-free, gentle cleanser for both morning and nighttime use. Dr. Zenovia’s Bakuchiol Hydrating Cleanser is specially designed for even the most sensitive skin. It contains powerful antioxidants and skin-soothing agents to help reduce dryness/flaking and restore suppleness and a boost of hydration to the skin. Apply the cleanser with clean fingertips, using circular motions, and rinse with lukewarm water to thoroughly remove. Finish by gently patting your face with a clean towel.

Moisturize: Whether your rosacea-prone skin is feeling dry or oily, moisturization is an absolute necessity as it helps protect and restore the skin barrier. Moisturizers also help keep irritants off the skin. Ideal for even the most sensitive skin, Dr. Zenovia’s Peptide + Ceramide Repairing Moisturizer contains a unique combination of bio-equivalent ceramides, potent humectants, and emollients that help attract, retain, and distribute moisture to fortify the skin’s protective barrier and combat dryness for a glowing, radiant complexion. Free of alcohol, this moisturizer helps protect the integrity of the skin’s dermal matrix and boosts elasticity.

Apply a Sun Protectant: UV radiation is a well-known trigger for Rosacea. Remember to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 as the last step in your daily skincare routine. Dr. Zenovia recommends wearing a mineral sunscreen (zinc/titanium) every day- not just when you plan on spending time out in the sun. (Chemical sunscreens are more likely to irritate the skin). Dr. Zenovia’s Vitamin C Brightening Moisturizer SPF 30 provides transparent nano zinc-oxide broad-spectrum mineral protection from harmful UVA/UVB rays, free radical damage, and environmental stress for radiant, even-toned skin.

Skincare to Avoid for Rosacea-Prone Skin

Skin with rosacea can be easily irritated. It is, therefore, best to avoid skincare products that can inflame the skin (and may cause more rosacea) including exfoliants, harsh astringents, and acids. Testing new products on a patch of skin before use is recommended. Additionally, avoid rubbing or scrubbing your face. This includes using harsh washcloths and facial sponges- it is imperative to remain gentle with rosacea-prone skin!
